Former US President Donald Trump, who was indicted by the Department of Justice over potential mishandling of classified documents, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the charges against him.
Trump has been charged with 37 counts, including 31 counts of willful retention of national defense information. It's the first time in American history that a former president has faced federal charges.
The 49-page indictment includes details about how Trump, after leaving office in 2021, allegedly took classified documents to his Mar-a-Lago resort and resisted the government's attempts to retrieve the materials. In a statement, special counsel Jack Smith encouraged the public to read the indictment "in full to understand the scope and the gravity of the crimes charged."
Trump has denied any wrongdoing, and he called the indictment "a political hit job."
